Award-winning products like chips made from Kimberley-grown chia and a convenient granola-based snack were just two of the innovative creations from the Student Food and Beverage Product Development Awards.
Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman congratulated the competitors in the inaugural award at Curtin University of Technology today.
“These awards aim to recognise and encourage innovation in product development with WA food ingredients,” Mr Redman said.
“This type of work is critical in helping add value to the State’s agricultural industry.”
The Undergraduate Award was presented to Curtin students Carol Grocott, Winnie Lau, Elly Wong and Lauren Young for their product Go-nola Duo.
Go-nola Duo is a ready-to-eat breakfast snack meal consisting of crunchy granola and fruit preserved in juice, presented in a dual compartment container and including a spoon. It gives consumers a healthy, convenient and portable breakfast.
The Postgraduate Award went to Alexandra Grant for her gluten and cholesterol free, lemon and black pepper-flavoured chia chips, containing ground chia seeds.
The Minister said the awards were part of a link between the Department of Agriculture and Food’s food technology unit and Curtin’s food science and technology program.
“This link has strengthened the State’s capacity to deliver effective food science, research, education and training solutions for the WA food industry from gate to plate,” he said.
