Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman has congratulated the 2009 Western Australian Landcare Heroes, winners in 12 State and national categories.
“These awards give due recognition to the outstanding work of these individuals and groups who preserve our natural resources and protect the future of agriculture, fisheries, tourism and recreation in WA,” Mr Redman said.
The Minister said the award-winning work ranged from the development of a recovery plan for the Avon River to an innovative on-farm enterprise involving wildflower seed production.
Winners of the nine national categories will compete at next year’s National Landcare awards.
The 2009 WA Landcare Award recipients included:
- Department of Water River Rats Living Streams Award: Toodyay Friends of the River
- Australian Forest Growers WA Tree Farmer of the Year: Bill Hollingworth
- Department of Agriculture and Food WA Landcare Professional Award: Amy Krupa
- Australian Government Coastcare Award: Stirling Natural Environment Coastcare (SNEC)
- Australian Government Landcare NRM Region Award: Wheatbelt NRM Incorporated
- Australian Government Individual Landcarer Award: Mike Kerkmans
- Landcare Australia Young Landcare Leader Award: Linda Vernon
- Landcare Australian Urban Landcare Award: GeoCatch
- Leighton Holdings Indigenous Award: Restoring Connections
- Landcare Primary Producer Award: Rob and Jenny Warburton
- Toshiba Landcare Community Group Award: Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee Inc.
- Westpac Education Award: Baldivis Primary School
The Department of Agriculture and Food was the major sponsor of the State Landcare Award ceremony held at Geraldton. Mr Redman will present WA’s inaugural ‘People’s Choice Award’ later this month at a special awards ceremony in Perth.
