The Swan Valley Planning Committee has been bolstered by the appointment of four new members including a new chairman.
Planning Minister John Day said the new appointments would provide the committee with a wealth of experience across a range of important areas that were relevant to the people and industries of the Swan Valley.
“New chairperson Derrick Tomlinson has significant planning and political experience while maintaining a strong interest in Swan Valley’s character and lifestyle,” Mr Day said.
Mr Tomlinson served as an East Metropolitan MLC for 16 years until 2005. He was also the chairman of the inaugural Swan Valley Advisory Committee.
“Mr Tomlinson replaces Tony Cobanov who has served as chairperson since 2004 and whose commitment and valuable contribution is greatly appreciated,” the Minister said.
“Dr Cheryl Kickett-Tucker has also been appointed to the committee to represent Aboriginal interests in the area. She is currently a director at the National Research Centre for Aboriginal Children and Family Wellbeing, an associate professor at Murdoch University, and holds a variety of positions representing the interests of indigenous communities.”
Dr Kickett-Tucker replaces Dale Tilbrook who has served on the committee since 2007. The committee has also been strengthened by the appointments of Hamish Johnston, CEO of Equestrian Western Australia, and Harry Gratte, a local farmer with a degree in biological science with environmental experience in soil erosion, nutrient loss and pollution.
“Dr Kickett-Tucker, Mr Johnston and Mr Gratte bring substantial experience and knowledge and will be valuable additions to the committee,” Mr Day said.
They will be joined by City of Swan Mayor Charlie Zannino who will continue on the committee, and another City of Swan Councillor representing the Swan Valley Ward.
The following re-appointments have also been approved:
- Brian Hunt from the Midland and Districts Chamber of Commerce
- Jim Lovreta from the Grape Growers Association
- Daniel Pinnelli from the Swan Valley and Regional Winemakers Association
- Laura Carija from the Swan Valley Tourism Council
- Keith Vuleta, a long-time resident of the Swan Valley
- Elizabeth Taylor (former councillor) representing the chairman of the Western Australian Planning Commission.
The committee is established under the Swan Valley Planning Act 1995 and prescribes planning and development objectives, and advises on land use planning and development issues. The committee meets monthly and all appointments are until June 30, 2011.
