Future South-West industrial development plans to be unveiled

Portfolio: Lands

The final plan for the future development of the Kemerton Industrial Park, north of Bunbury, will be released at a public information session next month.

Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said LandCorp and the Department of State Development will hold a community information session to present the final plan at the Leschenault Leisure Centre from 6.30pm-8.30pm on Tuesday, November 10.

Based on public comment, the plan draws together the findings of previous environmental and infrastructure studies and will form the basis of future planning and environmental approvals.

Mr Grylls said the plan will guide expansion of the estate which was established more than 20 years ago.

“The Government identified the need for an updated strategy to ensure Kemerton could be developed to achieve workable outcomes for the community, economy and the environment,” he said.

The Minister said the ongoing development of Kemerton as a world-class industrial estate would include:

·          adoption of the final strategy plan as the over-arching concept to guide development of Kemerton

·          monitoring and maintaining environmental effectiveness of the buffer area

·          protection and linking of significant remnant vegetation and wetlands through conservation corridors in the buffer

·          guidelines to control types of industries and infrastructure which can be developed

·          investigation of water supply and water management options

·          comprehensive Aboriginal heritage surveys.

The Kemerton Industrial Estate was established in 1985 to cater for the needs the heavy industry and comprises a 2,110 hectare (ha) industrial core, a 293ha Support Industry Area and a 5,140ha buffer area.

The plan was prepared with input from LandCorp, Department of State Development, the Shire of Harvey and water, health and environmental agencies. It was released for public comment in 2007 supported by a community information session in February 2008.
