Wildflower delights in the heart of Perth city

Portfolio: Environment

Environment Minister Donna Faragher today officially opened the 2009 Kings Park Festival under the theme ‘Nature Inspiring Art’.

This year’s festival showcases the spectacular displays of Western Australian wildflowers found within the State’s Botanic Garden and how they have inspired a range of artistic productions.

WA artists will demonstrate their skills and nature-inspired art by school students will be on display.  Other artists will be conducting creative hands-on workshops and display their artworks in the Botanic Garden.

“There are many ways to celebrate our environment through this year’s Kings Park Festival, with free guided walks and local artists on hand demonstrating their nature-inspired art works,” Mrs Faragher said.

“Visitors to the festival will have the opportunity to ‘connect’ with Kings Park through a number of interactive events, including a night stalk through the bushland; bird and wildflower guided walks; and gardening demonstrations and presentations by Kings Park horticultural staff.”

The Minister said Kings Park and Botanic Gardens had an important scientific role as a world-renowned centre for botanical research, plant development and the conservation of endangered species.

The festival includes a varied program of free entertainment and activities, including the magical Lotterywest Wild Fairyland Festival on Sunday, September 20; and the Festival Marketplace on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, which includes indigenous Dreamtime storytelling, craft and gardening stalls, the Friends of Kings Park plant sale, and free entertainment and music.

The 2009 Kings Park Festival ends on September 28.
