Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls has announced $100,000 funding from the Kimberley Regional Grants Scheme for restoration of the historical Sailmaker’s Shed in Broome.
The single storey corrugated iron shed was built circa 1904 and is a rare example of the type of building associated with the operation of the Broome’s pearling industry.
The Minister said he was pleased that the Royalties for Regions funding had been made available to the Broome Historical Society to enable them to restore and maintain the sailmaker’s shed.
“Restoration will allow the historical society to reveal a more complete story of the site which in the early 1900s was the centre of Broome’s commercial area, servicing the town and its pearling industry,” Mr Grylls said.
“The area has the potential to become an historical precinct to attract tourists and locals given the proximity of the Museum; Pioneer Cemetery; the site of the flying boat wrecks bombed during World War II; the Old Wharf; and the remains of the old Tramway.”
The additional facility of the Sailmaker’s Shed would enable the Broome Historical Society to extend the space and facilities available to students, tour and community groups and provide additional space for exhibitions, meetings and social functions.
“The restoration will provide the extra space needed for the historical society but most importantly will help build Broome’s cultural heritage.” Mr Grylls said.
In 2008, more than 17,000 visitors attended the Broome Historical Museum sites and the restoration of the building will enable an expansion of activities and visitation by tourists to the area.
