Swan River bank stabilised by team planting at Ashfield Parade

Portfolio: Environment

Environment Minister Donna Faragher joined staff from the Swan River Trust and Town of Bassendean in planting local native species to assist stabilisation of the riverbank along the Swan River at Ashfield Parade.

“The State Government, through the trust’s Riverbank Grants Scheme, has provided $538,235 for project works which started in February 2008,” Mrs Faragher said.

About 2,000 local native species were planted as part of ongoing revegetation works of the Ashfield Parade Foreshore Restoration Project.

“This project is a partnership between the trust and the local council and provided an ideal opportunity for staff to unite and be involved in making a difference to the health of the river and its amenities,” the Minister said.

The Town of Bassendean has contributed $600,000 and additional funding of $54,435 has also been provided to the town from the Recreational Fishing Community Grants.

These works included installation of access stairs; kayak ramp; fishing platform; improvements with re-contouring the road; modification to drainage; creation of stormwater treatment wetlands; and extensive foreshore rehabilitation works.

“This is tangible evidence of the effectiveness of such partnerships in significantly improving shoreline health and amenity,” Mrs Faragher said.

The erosion control and revegetation works is expected to continue until 2011.
