Liberal-National Government delivers funds for Roebourne Community Centre

Portfolio: Premier

The Liberal-National Government reiterated a major commitment to the upgrade of the Roebourne Community Centre by delivering $128,700 towards the project through the Pilbara Regional Grants Scheme.

Premier Colin Barnett confirmed the funding on a visit through Roebourne which was part of a two-day tour of the region which included Karratha and Port Hedland.

The grant, issued via the Liberal-National Government’s Royalties for Regions program, complements project funding by the Shire of Roebourne and the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

The upgrade will provide a range of flexible spaces that can be used separately or in combination, making the centre more functional for a wide range of community groups.

“The Liberal-National Government has made a strong policy commitment to redress the lack of investment in regional Western Australia and this is yet another decision we have made to achieve that goal,” Mr Barnett said.

“The Roebourne Community Centre is widely used by the local community for a variety of purposes, including meeting space, function space, activity areas, performing arts events and community meetings.

“These upgrades involve improving the quality of the facility to ensure it remains a community focal point and continues to be a well-used community asset for local families.”

Major upgrades included:

  • renovations to the kitchen, disabled toilets and stage and dressing rooms
  • upgrades to the air-conditioning plant
  • general improvements to male and female toilets
  • the creation of a public art mural on the exterior of the building to discourage graffiti vandalism and improve the visual aspect of the centre.

All upgrades are designed so that the community centre will be Roebourne’s Emergency Evacuation Centre.

The upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of this year.
