Community Services Minister Robyn McSweeney today officially opened a $6million, BHP Billiton funded, YMCA Early Learning Centre in Newman.
Mrs McSweeney said the centre would help combat the 12 to 18-month waiting list for long day child care services in the region.
“This modern facility ensures that local families have access to the best possible children’s services at their doorstep,” she said.
Accommodating up to 120 children, aged from birth to school age for Pilbara-based BHP Billiton Iron Ore employees, the centre will also accept enrolments from the wider community.
“My congratulations to BHP Billiton and YMCA on their investment for the children of the Newman region,” the Minister said.
“The centre is a great initiative and supports the State Government’s commitment to ensure quality early childhood services to build strong, vibrant communities in country Western Australia.
“Children’s early years are their most important. What happens then influences their development through life.”
