Liquor restrictions for Pilbara community

Portfolio: Racing and Gaming

The remote Aboriginal community of Jigalong has been declared a restricted area under section 175 of the Liquor Control Act 1988.

Racing and Gaming Minister Terry Waldron said making Jigalong a restricted area meant it was now an offence to sell, supply, possess or bring liquor into the community.

“The decision to declare Jigalong a restricted area was made after my office received a request to do so by the Jigalong Community Incorporated,” Mr Waldron said.

“After visiting the community earlier this year and meeting with representatives of the WA Police and the Shire of East Pilbara, I determined that it was in the interest of public health and safety to make Jigalong a restricted area.

“These regulations come into effect immediately.”

Liquor licensees breaching the restrictions will be liable for a $5,000 fine, while all other people in breach of the restrictions will face a $2,000 fine.

The restrictions give police the power to seize and dispose of opened or unopened liquor containers throughout the community.

The Minister paid tribute to the Jigalong Community leaders who had worked with the State Government to achieve today’s outcome.

“Section 175 1(a) restrictions are a clear way in which communities can work with the State Government to manage the influence of alcohol and protect those most at risk,” he said.
