What does Australia's best hospital need?

Portfolio: Health

5/06/07

Over the next month Western Australians will have the chance to help shape the design of the new $1.1billion Fiona Stanley Hospital.

Health Minister Jim McGinty invited members of the public to join the architects, planners and health professionals charged with designing the new hospital, at a series of workshops to be held across the metropolitan area in June and early July.

“The feedback and ideas gathered at these workshops will assist in planning for the new hospital across a range of areas - from interior design, safety, security and retail services, through to parking, access and way finding,” Mr McGinty said.

“This exceptional opportunity to contribute to the look and feel of Fiona Stanley Hospital should not be passed up, and I strongly encourage members of the public to get involved.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to build Australia’s best hospital.”

The public workshops will be held at four metropolitan sites – Joondalup (19 June), Rockingham (27 June), Fremantle (28 June) and Bentley (2 July).

The Minister said the workshops were just one part of a broader consultation program that will also see advocacy groups, health support groups, staff and patients have a say in the hospital’s design.

Places at the public workshops are limited. To register interest in attending, or for further information about Fiona Stanley Hospital, call 1800 659 475 or email fsh@millswilson.com.au.

Construction of the Fiona Stanley Hospital is scheduled for completion in 2012. The hospital will offer comprehensive health care services to communities in the south of Perth and across WA.

The 643-bed hospital will offer an array of acute medical and surgical services including:
  • the State centre for treatment of major trauma, burns, and heart and lung transplants;
  • WA’s first comprehensive cancer service south of the river including radiotherapy treatment facilities, medical oncology and haematology;
  • renal dialysis;
  • a major 24-hour emergency department;
  • paediatrics;
  • cardiothoracic services;
  • radiology services including CT and MRI scanning; and
  • a state-of-the-art medical research facility to be built in conjunction with universities and the WA Institute of Medical Research.
